What’s holding you back?

Some of you have already completed my Innovative Educator survey. If you have not yet responded, I invite you to share your insights HERE. Of the responses so far, an overarching theme of needing support to get “unstuck” has emerged, so today’s resources aim to help with that.

IN MOTION

How I Learned to Love “Beautiful Constraints”

Some of the most meaningful work I’ve created didn’t come from having endless time, support, or resources. Instead, it came from navigating limitations.

As educators, we see this every day: constraints force clarity, sharpen creativity, and push us toward unexpected breakthroughs. Yet when it comes to our own careers or entrepreneurial ideas, we often view those same constraints as signals to slow down or wait.

My longtime collaborator Chris Van Houten, aka Mr. VH, suited up for a mo-cap session in my living room to help create the EduMotion MVP.

This week I’m exploring the idea of “beautiful constraints,” and how embracing what feels limiting can actually open new paths in our work, our creativity, and the impact we’re meant to make. Think of this as an invitation to see your current constraints as catalysts, not barriers.

IN FOCUS

Embrace Your Constraints to Unlock Innovation

1️⃣ REFRAME: Don’t ask: “Why can’t I do this?”;
Instead, ask: “What does this limitation make possible?”

2️⃣ SHRINK THE PROBLEM: Turn a huge goal into a testable 1–2 week experiment.
Small wins → fast learning → scalable solutions.

3️⃣ LOOK OUTSIDE YOUR LANE: Innovation rarely comes from education alone.
Look at restaurants, tech startups, museums, fitness studios…
Ask: “How would they solve this?”
Great ideas often show up sideways.

Constraints don’t block innovation. They focus it.
Start with what you have + where you are, and watch what opens.

IN FLOW

I’m learning to fly, but I ain’t got wings; Coming down is the hardest thing.”

Digital Detox: My Analog Picks of the Week

🎵 Tom Petty and the Hearbreakers (featuring “Learning to Fly”)
This classic album explores themes of daring and discovery, and “Learning to Fly” (listen here) is a reminder that constraints don’t hold us back, they teach us how to rise. When you’re stepping into something new, those limits might be the wings that help you soar.

📘 A Beautiful Constraint by Adam Morgan & Mark Barden
One of the most influential frameworks on my own creative journey. This book flips the script: instead of seeing limits as blockers, it shows how they can become catalysts for invention, clarity, and momentum. If you're navigating a pivot, building a project, or launching something of your own, this is the mindset shift that unlocks possibility.
